The revision of my music video analysis, "Dear Future Husband" by Meghan Trainor really emphasizes the revision process. Once I begin to make my changes I will have applied the procedural and declarative knowledge to my paper. This meets the requirements of of the learning outcome of revision and writing as a process because I really focusing on making my paper a more well rounded piece of work. The point of revising a paper is to learn from your mistakes and to fix them. Once the mistakes are edited my paper will flow better and will be a better paper in general. Fixing my mistakes will help my apply what I have learned in Composition 105 and learn how to write in a different way.
The paper I chose to revise for composition 105 is my music video analysis. I wrote my paper on Meghan Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband” music video. This was the second paper that was written and could use some work.
For my revision, I would use the procedural revision tactic. The procedural knowledge in writing really has to do with how the writer argues their point of view in the paper. In my paper I do not completely “connect the dots” on how certain parts of the video are relevant to the other parts. This makes my points of discussion very disjointed. For example; in my paper I discuss how many different outfits are worn by the dancers and singers in the video, but I fail to show how that is important or relevant to my argument. I did not really give reasons as to why I was making those points in my paper. The article will have some important revisions that will help make help make it a better rounded paper. For example I will explain why the costume changes are important to the overall effect of the video. I will also explain why Meghan Trainor wanted the music video to look like a modern twist on the cliché 1950’s housewife. Once the points are discussed, the paper will be much smoother and make much more sense. This process would be using declarative knowledge to think through the essentials that this paper needs to make it a better music video analysis. Declarative: This is knowing "that" rather than "when". An example of this would be knowing facts rather than knowing of when to do a procedure.
Procedural: This is a knowledge of how to do a certain procedure. Conditional: This is the knowledge of knowing why and when to do or not do a procedure. The topic for my research paper is domestic violence. Domestic violence is the violent and aggressive behavior involving the abuser and his/her spouse that generally occurs within the house. Domestic violence is a serious issue which has always been present in our society but is often overlooked. The recent events of celebrities such as professional football player Ray Rice and others have brought it media attention and forced people to recognize the seriousness of this issue. I decided on this topic because crime shows that deal with domestic violence have always intrigued me. I also know of a few people who have had abusive partners. I do not understand why people would continue to stay with someone who harms them. The victims often refuse to report their abuser out of fear. This is clearly wrong and something needs to be done about it. I hope that the readers of my research paper will see as I do and realize that this is a serious nationwide issue which needs to be fixed. Domestic violence affects men, women, and children. The people who affected by it are getting physically injured and emotionally scarred. The physical injuries can range anywhere from bruises to broken bones to more serious medical conditions. I think that the information for this topic will not be too hard to find. However, since it is such a big topic I will need to ensure that I keep my research narrowed in on my particular question. My research will include reading many articles about the topic. Although I may not directly use all the articles in my paper I will definitely need them for my own personal background knowledge. There are many medical journals and articles about domestic violence. It will not be too difficult to comprehend, but it will be challenging to understand why people feel the need for domestic violence and why the victims stay with their abusers. Hopefully with my research I will learn a little more about why. DefinitionDomestic violence is the violent and aggressive behavior involving the abuser and his/her spouse that generally occurs within the house.

Have you ever sat down and watched a professional sports game? It does not have to be any sport in particular. Whether it is the NBA, MLB or NFL they all have one thing in common. All of the athletes are drinking Gatorade. They are drinking Gatorade, they have Gatorade water bottles and even Gatorade sweatbands. The orange G with a green background is seen everywhere in professional sports. Although Gatorade is well advertised throughout games, the company has other ways to advertise. This can include television commercial, ads on YouTube, or simply by people talking about it. In the ad “Sweat it to get it”, Gatorade uses real life footage of a convenience store, celebrity endorsement, and a stereotype of athletes to market their product. The commercial is produced by the well-known company, Gatorade. People from all over the country recognize the orange “G”, and know that it is a product used to re-energize athletes. However, that does not stop non athletes from buying the sports drink. Gatorade makes a point of this throughout the entire ad. Gatorade’s target audience in the ad “Sweat it to get it” is athletes and people who work out regularly. Gatorade reaches its target audience by playing this one minute ad on television and online. It is a good length to place in front of a YouTube video, or to play on a radio app such as Pandora or Spotify so athletes might hear it when they workout. Gatorade would run this ad during televised games or on channels such as ESPN because that is most likely to be what athletes would be watching. How an advertisement looks really helps determine the success of the ad. The look of the ad is simple but effective. Within the first ten seconds of the commercial the audience knows it is for Gatorade because they see the familiar logo and bottles. It shows a convenience store, which is a setting that the majority of Americans are familiar with. The characters in the ad are dressed like an average customer and cashier that anyone would see at the store. Cam Newton is also shown to look like what your typical athlete would look like after practice. At the end of the ad, Gatorade uses their style of lettering to have the saying “You Don’t Sweat it, you don’t Get it” across the entire screen and it is the last thing the viewer sees, making that quote stick in their head. (Youtube.com) The “Sweat it to get it” ad is footage of a convenience store. This commercial was shot with fifteen hidden cameras in a real convenience store. The man who is buying the drinks has no clue that he is on film. At the beginning of the commercial he casually walks in, and heads straight for the drinks section without any direct look at the cameras. The camera footage shows different parts of the store from different angles. There is an aerial view, a view from inside the refrigerator, and one from right behind the cash register. With the camera work, viewers can clearly see the average man’s confusion as he tries to buy Gatorade, and that the cashier is serious when he tells the customer that he cannot have it. This scene proves that it is real footage of a convenience store. The camera work makes the commercial seem real and not just actors reading their lines which adds to the effectiveness of the ad. Gatorade often advertises their product by using with celebrity endorsements. As this commercial progresses the celebrity Cam Newton walks into the store and sees the non-athletic man trying to buy Gatorade. Cam Newton is well known National Football League player. He is the starting quarterback for the South Carolina Panthers and went to college at Auburn University. While at Auburn he won the Heisman trophy and led his team to the National Title. Newton is best known for his strong arm, massive smile, and his “Superman” move where he pretends to rip open his jersey after a touchdown. In this scene Newton is dressed like an athlete. He has on workout clothes and the viewers can clearly see a sweat stain in the middle of his shirt. In the commercial the man is genuinely shocked and excited to see that Newton is in the store with him. The man is speechless and he tries to imitate the “Superman” move. Cam Newton acknowledges the man and then proceeds to smack the Gatorade out of his hands and says “You heard what he said.” This is the use of ethos to sell the product. Gatorade shows that they are credible because athletes such as Newton are endorsing their product. (Athletes endorsed by Gatorade) This also shows that professional athletes agree with the phrase; “sweat it to get it” and therefore everyone else should too. Newton is not the only athlete Gatorade uses to endorse their product. The list includes people such as; Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, the Manning brothers, Tiger Woods, and Derek Jeter. The use of ethos and credibility plays a very big role in Gatorade’s advertising. The majority of their commercials will have professional athletes in them because that is who the target audience of Gatorade knows and wants to model their athletic careers after. Therefore it is in Gatorade’s best interests to continue advertising with athletes. (Athletes Endorsed by Gatorade) Gatorade is taking a risk by wanting to advertise to only athletes. The content of their ad has quotes such as “You have to burn some to earn some” or “You have to take action for extraction”. This shows that Gatorade only wants to target athletes as their consumers. However, by solely focusing on athletes, will Gatorade lose some of their other customers? On the YouTube video of the ad, viewers comment “I’d just buy a Powerade” – Kevin Harris. (Youtube.com) Gatorade is willing to risk offending the non-athletes who buy their product just to sell to more athletes. They are betting that the risk is worth the reward and that this ad will make some people agree with them and buy the product. Consumers can take the advertisement two different ways. The first way is negative; “Gatorade only cares about athletes, and is being selective by not selling to average people. Or the second view could be positive; “Gatorade was actually created to replenish nutrients for athlete when they sweat and maybe it is not good for average people to drink it.” Studies have actually proven that the second viewpoint is the correct one. A typical thirty two ounce Gatorade bottle has two hundred calories in it. If someone does not work out and then drinks Gatorade, they could gain weight. Gatorade is also loaded with lots of Vitamin A which can be very good for someone. However, if someone drinks too much Gatorade without working out it can lead to vitamin toxicity which is very harmful to a person. When Gatorade advertises “Sweat it to get it”, perhaps they have the best interests of their consumers in mind. (Livestrong.com) While Gatorade has the best interests of their customers in mind, they use a logos type of advertising to also get a point across to the viewers who do not workout. Gatorade wants to show that since they do not work out and sweat, they do not need electrolytes or extra sugars because they did not lose any. Viewers will use this logic to realize that it does not make sense for them to buy Gatorade unless they workout. This advertisement also could address the bigger issue that Americans have. That issue is that we do not workout enough and need to start exercising more often. There are stereotypes of athletes everywhere. Many people believe that athletes get paid too much, do not have a real job, and are just there to look pretty. However, Gatorade does their best to break this stereotype. In the commercial “Sweat it to get it”, they show that athletes work hard and deserve to be able to replenish their bodies. This includes using pathos as an advertising technique. Gatorade wants athletes to be proud of their hard work and agree with the company that they should be the ones buying the sports drink rather than others who do not workout. I believe that Gatorade did a top notch job of advertising their product. They took a risk in focusing their product to solely athletes but I believe it will work out well for them. Gatorade advertises their product in a way that is logical, humorous, and effective. The goal of this ad is to encourage consumers to work out more and then buy Gatorade to replenish their health. In the ad “Sweat it to get it”, Gatorade uses real life footage of a convenience store, celebrity endorsement, and a stereotype of athletes to sell their drink. Gatorade continues to effectively advertise and be a well-known, successful company. |
The claim of the video is that Detroit is not as scary and hopeless as many people think it is. Outsiders think it is scary because media and photos make it seem horrible. The target audience is people who have not yet been to Detroit but judge it based off what they have heard or seen photos of. The film uses rhetorical strategies such as the ethos, pathos and logos. The ethos is the narrator Johnny Knoxville who is a credible, well known person. The pathos are the emotions that people from the Detroit area feel when watching the video. We are proud of our city, but also feel the need to fix it. Logos are used by how the producers show why Detroit is so run down. The producers point out that Detroit was once a thriving city, but due to riots and economy it has gone downhill.
The story of Detroit is being told by an outsider who is interviewing Detroit natives and what they think of their city compared to what outsiders think. The city of Detroit is being defined and analyzed. Johnny Knoxville is traveling throughout the city visiting nd analyzing all different parts of the city. The information is being presented as the facts and from the viewpoint of “this is how the city is and will be for a long time.” However I think the film leaves out a very important part of the city. It fails to show images of the city in front of the Detroit River. There are no images of Joe Louis Arena, Comerica, the GM building or Cobo Center. These are important and beautiful parts of the city that the producer does not even mention.
I think the images of Detroit are correct up to a point. Detroit is full of wide streets and empty houses. I have seen parts of Detroit that are run down or boarded up but there are also parts of Detroit that are nice! Some communities have nice houses and are really growing strong.
My experiences with Detroit have been positive. I have been downtown for Tiger’s and Wing’s games. I have also been in Mexican town and volunteered at a church mission there. I believe some of my experience are similar to Knoxville’s; the parts where he mentions that people in Detroit are very friendly, proud, and want to make the city a better place.

Every girl has an image in her head of what her “perfect husband” will look or act like. For many this includes being attractive, sweet, attentive, and overall the perfect person. The artist Meghan Trainor is no different from anyone other girl. She shows what qualities she wants in her perfect husband through the music video “Dear Future Husband”. Trainor does this through amplifying lyrics, using an attractive man to play the husband and changing the scenery throughout the video. Throughout the whole video Trainor has an amplifying relationship between the lyrics and the video. The opening verse of the song states “Dear future husband here’s a few things you’ll need to know if you wanna be my one and only all my life.” While this verse is being sung there is a young girl at a tea party. This image is supposed to be a young Trainor imaging her future husband. Another example of this is when she says “You got that nine to five but baby so do I so don’t be thinking I’ll be home and baking apple pies, I never learned to cook.” While she is singing this there are images of her trying to cook, but an apple pie is on fire in the background. She wants the husband to do all these wonderful sweet things for her, but she does not seem willing to take on the responsibilities of a wife. The intentions of Trainor’s lyrics is made even clearer by the camera work. This video has good visuals. The camera work is clear and fast paced, but not so fast that the audience does not know what the scene is. The transitions between scenes are well edited. Trainor goes from being a little girl, to dancing, to the house, to the bedroom, and even to outdoor spaces like a carnival. The visuals continue to be great. This video has lots of close ups of Trainor. For the majority of it she is dressed with a cheetah shirt and a red leather jacket with a knee length blue skirt. However she also wears an apron while she is cleaning and cooking. This shows a modern twist on the look of a housewife from the sixties. Trainor wears leather in almost every scene of the video. There a lot of outfit changes for both Meghan Trainor and the man playing her future husband, however the background dancers generally wear the same outfits throughout the video. Although Trainor is the main focus in the shots there are other people who play key roles in the music video. She has her two dancer who are always with her during the refrain. Then of course there is the man who plays the future husband. This man is good looking and throughout the video is constantly trying to find a way to please his wife. There is also a quartet of men who dance with Trainor and sing throughout the video. They add an effect to the video which makes is seem like it is a modern twist on a fifties or sixties housewife and husband. Often in music videos there is a voyeuristic view of the female body. This does not seem to play a big role in this music video. Although Trainor is dressed attractively and looks good there is not any real focus on her body. The focus is directed towards her husband. The video seems to have an emphasis that her husband must be good looking. The music video of “Dear Future Husband” by Meghan Trainor is well put together. Trainor gets her point of what her ideal husband must be like and she does this through amplifying lyrics, using an attractive man to play the husband and changing the scenery throughout the video. Trainor shows that she is just like every other girl who ever dreamed of her future man, she just showed it through lyrics and music video rather than her imagination. | |
