Every girl has an image in her head of what her “perfect husband” will look or act like. For many this includes being attractive, sweet, attentive, and overall the perfect person. The artist Meghan Trainor is no different from anyone other girl. She shows what qualities she wants in her perfect husband through the music video “Dear Future Husband”. Trainor does this through amplifying lyrics, using an attractive man to play the husband and changing the scenery throughout the video. Throughout the whole video Trainor has an amplifying relationship between the lyrics and the video. The opening verse of the song states “Dear future husband here’s a few things you’ll need to know if you wanna be my one and only all my life.” While this verse is being sung there is a young girl at a tea party. This image is supposed to be a young Trainor imaging her future husband. Another example of this is when she says “You got that nine to five but baby so do I so don’t be thinking I’ll be home and baking apple pies, I never learned to cook.” While she is singing this there are images of her trying to cook, but an apple pie is on fire in the background. She wants the husband to do all these wonderful sweet things for her, but she does not seem willing to take on the responsibilities of a wife. The intentions of Trainor’s lyrics is made even clearer by the camera work. This video has good visuals. The camera work is clear and fast paced, but not so fast that the audience does not know what the scene is. The transitions between scenes are well edited. Trainor goes from being a little girl, to dancing, to the house, to the bedroom, and even to outdoor spaces like a carnival. The visuals continue to be great. This video has lots of close ups of Trainor. For the majority of it she is dressed with a cheetah shirt and a red leather jacket with a knee length blue skirt. However she also wears an apron while she is cleaning and cooking. This shows a modern twist on the look of a housewife from the sixties. Trainor wears leather in almost every scene of the video. There a lot of outfit changes for both Meghan Trainor and the man playing her future husband, however the background dancers generally wear the same outfits throughout the video. Although Trainor is the main focus in the shots there are other people who play key roles in the music video. She has her two dancer who are always with her during the refrain. Then of course there is the man who plays the future husband. This man is good looking and throughout the video is constantly trying to find a way to please his wife. There is also a quartet of men who dance with Trainor and sing throughout the video. They add an effect to the video which makes is seem like it is a modern twist on a fifties or sixties housewife and husband. Often in music videos there is a voyeuristic view of the female body. This does not seem to play a big role in this music video. Although Trainor is dressed attractively and looks good there is not any real focus on her body. The focus is directed towards her husband. The video seems to have an emphasis that her husband must be good looking. The music video of “Dear Future Husband” by Meghan Trainor is well put together. Trainor gets her point of what her ideal husband must be like and she does this through amplifying lyrics, using an attractive man to play the husband and changing the scenery throughout the video. Trainor shows that she is just like every other girl who ever dreamed of her future man, she just showed it through lyrics and music video rather than her imagination. | |
