The article "How Hip-Hop Music Lost Its Way and Betrayed Its Fans" by Brent Staples, discusses that the rap and hip hop music culture has a negative impact. His thesis statement "But it finds its most virulent expression in rap music, which started out with a broad palette of themes but has increasingly evolved into a medium for worshipping misogyny, materialism and murder." shows that he believes that the culture is encouraging violence and harm. He uses pathos to appeal to the New York Times readers' emotions. He also tries to use logos to argue, however he uses outdated rappers such as 50 Cent and Tupac. He does not use current rappers or even post any of the lyrics for examples. He does however mention the CD "Massacre which was produced by 50 Cent. This CD cover and lyrics are incredibly violent and prove his point. Staples makes a solid argument but would benefit from facts or stats about the relevance of rap listeners and their violence, compared to non rap listeners.
